How to prepare Irish Sea Moss:
Rinse and clean well about one large handful of moss, taking care to get any dirt or sand rinsed off. I soak my moss for roughly 8 hours overnight at room temperature. Then I rinse and soak my moss several times throughout the day, once the moss has double in size and starts to take on a creamy or translucent colour, feel slippery and soft, its ready to blend. Measure about 1 cup of moss with 1 cup water ( you may need more or less water) blend in the jar of a high speed blender, until smooth and creamy. It will take on a gel like consistency. Store the moss in a glass jar in the fridge for up to 3 weeks. I like to leave the remaining moss in a glass jar with water in the fridge until I need to blend more. I change the water of the moss once per week to keep the freshness and the fishy smell at bay.
How to use your Irish Sea Moss:
Moss is exceedingly easy to add to your morning smoothies, vegan cheese recipes, vegan mousse’s or anything that you would need to thicken. It will take about 1 hour for the moss to thicken up your recipe after being placed in the fridge. It doesn’t change the consistency of smoothie’s as you can control the amount of liquid. Once added to your recipes the moss does not have any odour. I normally add about 2 tablespoons to my smoothies, for other ways to use sea moss check out my recipe index.
